Koh Samui Hospital Information
Koh Samui Hospital serves as the sole public hospital on the island of Koh Samui. It is situated just outside the coastal town of Nathon, located on the island’s west coast.
Overview The initiative to construct the hospital was initiated in 1969 by Marshal Dilok. At that time, Koh Samui’s population was approximately 31,000, yet there was no hospital available to address medical emergencies. Patients had to be transported to the mainland, a journey of 90 kilometers that included a boat ride, which was particularly perilous during the monsoon season. In response, the marshal and the residents of Koh Samui formed a committee to gather land and financial contributions. They ultimately succeeded in acquiring 27 rai of land, and Governor Khlay Jhitphithak reached out to the Department of Medical Services, which sanctioned the proposed budget of 4,200,000 THB for the hospital’s construction. The construction contract was finalized on September 17, 1972, and the hospital was completed and opened to patients on April 5, 1978. The inaugural director of the hospital was Doctor Montri Setthabut.
